This, very roughly, means an artist creates art with no output from the outside world whatsoever nor can they release their work until they have completely forgotten about it, as is the case with Not Available. Not Available is the second album by The Residents, supposedly recorded by the group in complete secrecy in 1974, and shelved after completion, to be released only when the group had entirely forgotten it. The plan called for the creation of complete projects that were literally not intended to be heard by anyone other than its creators. The Residents realized the truth in this ideal: that music really was difficult to record without considering the audience. Not Available used what was referred to as the theory of obscurity which called for the album to not be released until its makers literally forgot about its existence. It is said to be, questionably, the Residents' second recorded album in 1974, only to be released in 1978 after utilizing the theory of obscurity. Альбом 1978 Песен: 5. Not Available1978. But those steeped in the lore of The Residents' milieu have long known that the recording of the album was in realty an exercise in group therapy. The real reason that the band wished to deny its existence was the fact that they felt that the work was too personally revealing. What is not generally known, though, is that, as part of their therapeutic process, The Residents actually considered the idea of creating an operetta based on NOT AVAILABLE. Not Available' is a sad album which consists of long pieces that evolve into an unpredictable but catchy algorithm. The sound is refined and evocative power is thereby increased tenfold. The Residents would have produced it in 1974 with no intention to release it and it was not until 1978 that the album was released. With this record, The Residents have taken a giant step. Not only their world revolves more organically but musical scores are impeccable
