DJ-Kicks styled DJ-KiCKS on all cover artwork is a series of DJ mix albums, mixed by various artists for the independent record label K7 Records. DJ-Kicks started out in 1993 as a compilation of electronic DJ -style mixes in the techno or house genres, with the then-novel twist of being targeted to a home listening audience. If anyone has this mix-compilation on cassette / tape, please let me know
Probably one of the best mixes ever released, not only is the track selection top notch but the pacing of his mixing is quite simply phenomenal, be it recorded lived or not, you can't buy talent like this !!!! 10/10 !!!!
This is the most beautiful melodic techno mixes I've ever heard. The soundscapes sound more like a sci-fi movie soundtrack then dance music. Actually because of this mix I bought the Bladerunner soundtrack. This is really nice easy listening music to fill the background. I even listened to it on occasion in -4 pitch which makes it even more relaxed. The only bad thing about this mix is that it made me want to see Stacey Pullen perform in person. That in itself isn't bad however each occasion was cursed. One time I went to see him in MA at this dinky club and I ended up spilling a snow cone on me. I went outside to change my shirt and then I wasn't allowed back in by the security even though I had paid already. The last time was in Central Park NY where the Nazi Central Park Police chased everyone out of the park including Stacey Pullen. At least I still have this beautiful CD to listen to.
This is, without doubt, one of the best mix cd's to be released commercially. Pullen expertly mixes, melds, mutates and layers loads of fantastic, and in large part underplayed techno gems to great effect and with undeniable energy. There's a strong emphasis on funk, soul and melody, something that's patently missing from so many electronic music DJ's repertoires these days. Arguably it's Pullen at his peak - having heard him many times he has veered toward a more linear techno sound that's nowhere close to what's on display here. I find it mildly amusing and ironic that people seem to think that any of the transitions on this mix are anything other than pure perfection, and all it actually goes to demonstrate is a very limited understanding of what is actually happening. The post-production was quite revolutionary for a DJ mix at the time, using computer generated FX and sequencing to present something really quite different to the norm. When you consider how prevalent computers are in techno music these days it's patently absurd that even back in 1996, Pullen was able to use these tools far more effectively than the vast majority of contemporary DJ's.If you don't get this then I suggest you keep listening until you do. Timeless.
Paul Oakenfold used bladerunner samples in his Goa mix back in 1994, the Roy Batty death scene being the best in my opinion.
ive just realised the intro sample and the same used on track 6. if im right . is from bladerunner . awsome kick ass techno love it
Best mix CD ever made? Not a bad track in the selection and the intro is literally out of this world.
What we have here is one brilliant mix. The whole set is in some strong avantgarde mood, it's no coincidence that the Blade Runner lines were put in the mix. It feels like you're transported in some future time. Choice of tracks is absolutely TOP NOTCH, variety is the keyword here. This mix is a real journey, its a story told very well. His, what other people call sloppy mixing i find really ingenious, because.. when you have this kind of different tracks in the mix you need to be really witty in handling the mix between them, and i think he got away with it pretty good. This mix is total opposite of boring. Definitely recommend.
can someone please tell me were to get that phume track we r walkin'? pullen played a techno version of this track wich is not on this one for example:
This track is mislabeled in the DJ Kicks tracklisting (it would occasionally happen back in the day on these classic !K7 mixes). It's actually a track called "Buckfunk Discotheque" by Buckfunk 3000, and can also be heard in the mix on Ken Ishii's X-Mix: Fast Forward & Rewind. As far as I know, the only place it appears in unmixed form in on the "2nd Edition" EP on Language ( I believe this is a promo for the release you linked above, and also has the actual Phume track (which is more like ambient jungle). I suspect it was just a matter of mixing up which side was which when the time came to write out a tracklist. At any rate, "Buckfunk 3000" is a one of a kind groove and a phenomenal slab of skewed techno!
Brick my own
maybe try it says that version on this ep is different to the one on the comp. that you posted
It's been a while since I listened to this but what I remember is him attempting to mask his trainwrecked mixes with lots of effects. Super sloppy compared to most of the k7 releases. Their other mix cds from this era were amazing: Kevin Saunderson, Ken Ishi, Carl Craig, Claude Young, Dave Clarke...all incredible. This one. Not so much.
You might be thinking of the Carl Craig mix. I knew a fellow who thought the same.
just cause you cant distinguish a trainwreck from a delay effect doesn't mean there's a wreck in a mix.
"Do you like our owl?-It's artificial?-Of course, it is.-Must be expensive.-Yeah... I'm Rachael."The Blade Runner sample is nicely mysterious and well used as a recurring reminder of the general theme, theme which could indeed be labelled liquid something, as the selection is hugely made of flowing sounds. Still, it is quite a weak release, this. Some tracks are ace, yet the selection is sub-par, generally speaking, and the mixing skills of Mr. Pullen are rather unimpressive, especially for a commercially released mix. He admits it was digitally edited too, which is honest, but makes it even worse -- one gets to wonder what it sounded like raw. The general atmosphere is alright, but it is a bit flat and monotonous and could probably have been developped in a more interesting way. Not so exciting to listen to as a whole and one often finds themselves skipping portions or falling asleep, really.
I agree with the previous reviews - this is a fantastic release, probably the best DJ Kicks mix out there. Stacey mixing the Blade Runner soundtrack in is killer. Hard to believe it is rated anything less than a 5/5.
This is a brilliant release with hypnotising melodies and deep cuts. This is the first release of any artist, whose sloppy skills became reasonable and astonishing addition to the atmosphere of the tracklist. Absolutelly brilliant.
This is one of my favourite commercially released mixes. There is some wiggin' stuff on this mix, good for listening at home, even better out on the floor. I especially love the way he uses delay to build up some of the tracks, and he keeps bringing you back to a common theme with the Blade Runner sample. Definitely worth checkin'.
I cant believe the low rating for this mix. Stacey Pullen delivers a funky ass techno set mixing plenty of original material with some great tunes. Liquid techno is how i would describe this mix, it just flows through your senses as you listen to it. Those who gave this a low rating, i suggest you have another listen and appreciate the beauty and warmness of sounds that Mr Pullen has delivered.
