Album

A Moon Shaped Pool is Radiohead's ninth studio album. Of all the potential titles circulated during the wait for Radioheads ninth album - Dawn Chorus, Burn the Witch, Silent Spring - A Moon Shaped Pool comes as a petty disappointment. Where Kid A and Amnesiac were defined by electronic music vernacular, this record is defined by its orchestral arrangements. In the past, Thom Yorke has sharply peppered his lyrics with everyday cliches to suggest a mind consumed by meaningless data, but on the new album, he largely moves beyond cynicism. Live performances of the eleven songs featured on Radiohead's 9th album, A Moon Shaped Pool, recorded on a tour of Europe in 2016. in concerts way back in 1995. by Nina Corcoran. on May 11, 2016, 12:02am. A cursory glance at A Moon Shaped Pool may suggest a certain measure of indifference on the part of Radiohead. This goes beyond me, beyond you, he sings on Daydreaming. It reads like a typical Thom Yorke tweet about global warming and how rising sea levels will turn our planet into an amorphous blob of water held together by gravity. It revisits recording. Live performances of the eleven songs featured on Radiohead's 9th album, A Moon Shaped Pool, recorded on a tour of Europe in 2016. A Moon Shaped Pool is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Radiohead. release old favorites under a somber light. It features strings and choral vocals arranged by guitarist Jonny Greenwood and performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Intro: 00:00 Burn Moon Shaped Pool. Radiohead's long awaited LP9 is starting to become available at online retailers. Rumours of Radioheads much anticipated ninth album nicknamed LP9 by fans began as early as mid to late 2015. In late April 2016, the band began teasing new material via a cryptic internet and social media campaign. A Moon Shaped Pool is Radiohead's ninth studio album. Several songs, such as True Love Waits and Burn the Witch, were written years earlier. The tape degrades over time and becomes unplayable. Three days later, the band released the second single, Daydreaming accompanied by a music video directed by acclaimed filmmaker and Jonny Greenwood collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson. Their music is obsessed with the point where great truths harden into platitudes, where pure signal meets wretched noise. This is a piece of a Radiohead inch master tape from an actual recording session. If Radiohead have made the dehumanizing effects of technology their great theme, A Moon Shaped Pool is the first record in which, musically, they kick their way out of the machine, or at least make their cyborg soul more vestigial. It debuted at 1 on the UK Albums Chart, Radiohead's sixth number-one album in the UK. It was released as a download on 8 May 2016, backed by the singles Burn the Witch and Daydreaming. On their ninth studio album, Thom Yorke and co. Radiohead, who titled their ninth studio album A Moon Shaped Pool, have a unique grasp on how easily profundity can slip into banality. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order - a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album - and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opening Burn the Witch at the turn of the century, while the closing True Love Waits first appeared. It debuted at 1 on the UK Albums Chart, Radiohead's sixth number-one album in the UK. The entire album was released as a digital download on May 8, 2016. On May 3, the band released the first single and music video, Burn The Witch. Radiohead recorded A Moon Shaped Pool in southern France with longtime producer Nigel Godrich. Radiohead give us one of their most musically and emotionally arresting albums, full of low-flying panic attacks and gorgeous orchestration. It was released digitally on 8 May 2016, with CD and vinyl releases in June 2016 through XL Recordings. Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool. Three years on and I find myself spinning the white edition without realising the timing. I was lucky with my copy, superb and haunting sonics and still one of the best albums I've heard in recent years.
Bloodfire
I have four copies of this on vinyl, one black, two white and one deluxe version. all terrible. how can this be? Has it been repressed yet?
Longitude Temporary
Just need a good wash guys. After that it will sound much better
zmejka
Agreed, I sent mine for an ultrasonic clean and the sound is amazing
Lost Python
My copy has tiny labels on each side, anyone else experience this? Here are pictures of 2 copies (one Optimal, one Rainbo) https://imgur.com/x0iQRp4https://imgur.com/vLcOZAn

It's a thing with Thom Yorke/Radiohead releases.See also https://www.discogs.com/Thom-Yorke-Tomorrows-Modern-Boxes/release/6127488 and https://www.discogs.com/Thom-Yorke-Suspiria/release/12682472.The former even mentions this in the sales blurb: "Heavyweight 180g white vinyl completed with undersize 75mm centre labels, housed within heavy white board inner and outer sleeves. "
Ceck
My copy sounds like absolute crap.Lots of surface noise, static and heavy distortion in random places all over 2 discs(it sounds lite TKOL with it heavy fuzz on instruments).Daydreaming is unlistenable.Cleaning, adjusting tonearm didn't help.
Seevinev
I ordered the Optimal pressing as well as the super deluxe one. Although I lucked out with clean records on the super deluxe I definitely think the while one sounds better. I think I'm just going to put the white vinyl in the super deluxe packaging and use that as my playing copy!
Narder
Excellent album, don't buy this pressing. It's as if it eroded away or is clipping throughout. I have records that are forty years old and sound better on my turntable.
Villo
Well, i do not know if I got a defective copy but the sound of this release is far from good.
bass
Awesome pressing. It sounds really clean with no issues at all. Totally worth buying.
Karon
For those hoping one white vinyl pressing or the other is superior:Got the Rainbo press here in the USA, and heard the well-noted issues with occasional pops, etc. So ordered an Optimal from overseas (people seem to've had more luck with them), and... same issues. This is right out of the sleeve, after several passes with a carbon fibre brush. I'm also listening on a brand new cart and stylus I bought three days ago... and I listened to the Rainbo on my previous, totally different, old cart and stylus. In other words I've listened to both pressings on different needles and the sound issues are the same. (yes, I have devoted an insane amount of time to buying/listening to this album!). So safe to say, some copies have problems regardless of the pressing plant.I will say I like the paper inners on the Optimal press better than the cardboard ones on the Rainbow. They feel like they'll be gentler on the vinyl. They also seem to slide into the outer sleeve better -- I wonder if there are more warping complaints with the Rainbos because they're in thicker inners that constrict the vinyl in the sleeve. Maybe? Maybe it's random. I'll also say musically, this is a great freaking album, which is what the 5 stars are for. And like a lot of Radiohead records, some "imperfections" are actually part of the music (e.g. the distortion on portions of "Decks Dark"). So I say if you get a copy with some pops and glitches that weren't intended by the band, just pretend like they were supposed to be there; they kind of work with the texture of the record!
Kakashkaliandiia
Limited to 2 billion copies, grab it quick...stocks running low!
Xtintisha
bought a new piece of Opt Press and it sounds wonderful. I'm at peace..
Hudora
My Optimal Media copy is flat and clean. No issues. Sounds great. Bought from a shop in Newcastle, UK.
Blackstalker
Not sure the photos here, support the notes, as to which is which version.
Gardagar
sigh..am getting the black version.mine is the OPTIMAL MEDIA pressing, but it ain't a good press. there's a bit of defect on the intro for track Glass Eyes.the rest of the tracks are good. clarity. you guys are lucky..
Vichredag
i just bought another copy. bad apples in a basket..
Damand
Glass eyes is pretty poppy on my copy too :(
TheJonnyTest
Which release has the 66 page artwork booklet by Stanley Donwood? thanks
Vojar
It doesn't come with any physical release, not yet anyway. It was only distributed at streaming event record shops.
Syleazahad
I received my copy from Germany today (Optimal Pressing; cut by Bazza). As some others have also reported, my copy sounds great (minimal noise, centered, without warp, etc).
Tyler Is Not Here
So I opened my US purchased version from the Rainbow plant before I knew about the dual pressing and now I received my Rough Trade UK Optimal pressing. Do I break the seal and compare? Or just wait for the Deluxe edition which could potentially be 45rpm from Optimal anyways?
Kirizan
Got a perfect Optimal pressing today (Great sound,no surface noise, not warped and centered)
GAMER
Ordered a copy from UK, hoping for the same results
Marilore
Got my copy of the white vinyl from Amoeba in Berkeley, CA but the records came with what looks like black dirt or paint on both records. Going to go back and exchange it or return it. By the way the back of the cover has a sticker over the barcode but it has XLLP790 not XLLP790X underneath it, does that mean its the rainbow pressing? :( Record sounds fine but the records are not completely white which is annoying.
Mr.Death
it looks like the XLLP790X release is nowhere in the united states
Frlas
White vinyl often gets stuff mixed in during pressing. It doesn't affect sound, so don't return it. This is normal.
Urllet
Does anybody know how I can go about ordering the Optimal Media pressing?
Shalizel
retrocandy Does anybody know how I can go about ordering the Optimal Media pressing? https://www.discogs.com/release/8581634Check it out this link for Optimal Media Pressing
Meri
shipping is generally cheap if you buy from a UK seller on amazon. That is my strategy.
Yggfyn
The Optimal Media Gmbh pressing (this one) sounds beautiful. This is in contrast to the rainbow pressing which is definitely not very good. No complaints, one thing to note is that in the tracklisting on the back of the gatefold sleeve 'Burn the Witch' from Side A is not properly aligned. Would kill someone with OCD!
lubov
well, then you never heard the "in rainbows" ltd edition........for the first time you heard this perfect sound.
uspeh
My copy arrived today from Germany: it's the Optimal Media (VARIANT 1)Everything is PERFECT, perfect sound, absolutly no surface noise, not warped.... Nothing more to say.Someone knows if the "spécial edition" will be a 45rpm, because it's not listed for the moment ?
Fearlesssinger
occidenta67 My copy arrived today : it's the Optimal Media Gmbh.Everything is PERFECT, perfect sound, absolutly no surface noise, not warped.... Nothing more to say.Someone knows if the "spécial edition" will be a 45rpm, because it's not listed for the moment ? I've been wondering the same thing, but based on the length of the songs and the fact that the white vinyl edition is 2xLP at 33 1/3, I doubt there is space on 2 albums to cut them at 45 rpm :(
Marige
My copy arrived this morning, ordered from Germany. Got the Optimal Media pressing and the vinyl is flat, no warping at all. The record plays perfectly, no surface noise, pops or clicks. Very happy.
Beahelm
I apprehensively ordered the white vinyl edition, having had many coloured vinyl records before. White always seems to be the worse culprit. All fine until Side D...Present Tense...massive overwhelming crackling throughout the track and then it returns for True Love Waits. I'm used to white vinyl being a bit suspect but this is unacceptable. To the idiot that said they thought people were just complaining for the sake of it...swop with my copy then mate...let's see you 'enjoy the music' then.
Lianeni
BUY THIS COPY... NOT THE RAINBO PRESSING!Why?... I've got both and the Optimal pressing is superior I have to say. Less ticks, pops (well, hardly any) and lower background noise. Very quiet indeed and sounds great. A nicely done Bazza pressing.
Jerinovir
Just got this today and my white pressing is perfect. It also sounds quite good aswell, even though is mastered quite loudly...
MarF
Indeed, it is mastered very loudly. I am trying to determine if it is my needle (Grado silver) or the mastering itself that is clipping on the loudest parts of disc 1...
Impala Frozen
Great pressing this, sounds perfect and no warp. Have to laugh about people complaining about white vinyl, it is exactly the same vinyl as black or pink. I know because i worked 3 years in fabric in Haarlem. The vinyl is clear and you just put black or white or pink color in it.
Tat
Think you could be right about this. It is true you have to clean a white lp more than a black one before playing.
Ral
there is more impurities in white or pink than there is in black .. usually clear and black wax sounds the best.. the most common problem is that the records are packed to the inner sleeves before they are 110% dry from manofactory line.. that's why there is microscopical dirt in the wax when it is played the first time.. some are little damages in the surface some are paperdust from the sleeves.. plants don't have enough time to keep the records drying .. overloaded factory's makes the most worst records.. vinyl boom makes the records quality go down
Lynnak
My copy is 100% clean .. completely noise and crackling free white press..BUT opaque? = hell no, just plain white .. Proparly my best all white record pressing in my collection and I have plenty of these colored once.. so the pressing is perfect. Issue:Barcode (Printed on back cover): 6 34904 07901 7
Rigiot
Ahh.. OK :)) I though it is just the opposite.. like nail polish type of white..(I tried to google it) thanks for the info
Atineda
Opague means light does not shine through it, Some vinyl is colored but light can still shine through.
Brightcaster
My copy sounds good really, there is some mild surface noise but that really is to be expected with coloured vinyl. Great album too of course.
Fecage
I have plenty of colored vinyl that is dead quiet. Adversely, I have many black LPs that are very loud. Colored vinyl shouldn't be an excuse IMO.
wanderpool
I had this version (Barcode: 634904079017; Matrix; BG32644, ). Overall, for a commercial and colored vinyl it's a very good press; better than what I expected. Not perfect, but not a flop like some of other new press of this time. The Numbers is a little bit grainy; maybe due to a little warp. I played on a good system and the experience is very immersive. Thanks to Radiohead, but also a special mention to Nigel Godrich for the auditive journey!I hope the special edition box will come in 45RPM with a perfect high-fidelty sound!
Ese
Similar to TKOL, there are at least two pressings of this album. Here's the other release: https://www.discogs.com/Radiohead-A-Moon-Shaped-Pool/release/8666501Could be helpful for individuals to comment on which they have and how the sound is, since there seem to be several complaints about surface noise and the quality of pressing.
catterpillar
Definitely having the same issues with the white vinyl that everyone else is having.
Cemav
My copy was very noisy and slightly warped. There's a very loud pop throughout Deck's Dark on my copy that ruins the listening experience.
Quinthy
Same here! My version has similarly distracting crackle/noise on sides A through C. What a bummer.
Otiel
Note: XL sent out a note that "some of our Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool WHITE VINYL is in fact black despite having LIMITED EDITION WHITE stickers on the front." The correct color can be determined without opening by looking at the barcode on the back.White Vinyl Barcode: 634904079000Black Vinyl Barcode: 634904079017
Acebiolane
Mine has a sticker over the barcode. What's with this- is it black or white?
Tall
I picked up the LTD edition white vinyl from my local record store today and it looks and sounds flawless. I think some people just like complaining just to complain. Sit back and enjoy the music people!
Rageseeker
I'm not one to complain but this is the worst sounding piece of vinyl I can remember. I've got the special edition coming, hopefully that's better, but this is inexcusable and XL should be ashamed.
Agagamand
Have you perhaps considered that there may actually be bad copies out there, but you have perhaps been lucky? Just think yourself lucky and enjoy your silent copy...
August
what a great great album! love it! just another beer to enjoy even more ;)
Vudogal
Looks and sounds great. This is a very high quality pressing.
nadness
This white edition sounds just fine to me! No background noise at all. Maybe you should try and clean it (havent cleaned mine yet). Or swap your Crosley Cruiser for an actual turntable ;)
Goldcrusher
Anybody know if this is the case with th white and black? My white has pretty audible distortion in many places.
Meztihn
Ok.. I cannot say I have that issue either. I use an Ortofon 2M Bronze by the way..
WtePSeLNaGAyko
Background noise is not the issue. Its just too damn loud. Means its not mastered properly. And i use an Ortofon red MM cartrdidge.Preview
Ichalote
Haha! (miauo miauo miauo miauo miauo miauo miauo ten words)
Blackbrand
Yes i can also say it sounds like shit like every other Radiohead lp on XL recordings...
shustrik
No the normal 1lp version. . . . . . .
Delagamand
Which version of In Rainbows? Is it the deluxe 2LP clear vinyl cut at 45rpm?
Manazar
Both my copies of moon and in rainbows are mastered too damn loud. For example Weird fishes on rainbows sounds distorted.
Pumpit
All Radiohead LP on XL??? The Deluxe pressing of In Rainbows and TKOL sound absolutely amazing. So don't lump all Radiohead XL pressings together and say they all sound like shit.
Wooden Purple Romeo
Are you referring to surface noise / clicks & pops, or the actual sound quality of the cut? I found the single LP editions of In Rainbows and The King Of Limbs to be rather murky sounding. And XL are reissuing the entire Radiohead catalog in July...
ZEr0
Got my white copy yesterday. Pretty noisy in spots, mainly louder passages. Little disappointing. Might end up selling mine if I can recoup the cost, then try the black.
Opilar
Disappointingly noisy white vinyl. Can't quite understand the point of a limited version that probably sounds worse than the more common ones. Hopefully will improve after a good Okki Nokki clean.
Pooker
Anecdotal evidence suggests black vinyl pressings tends to have fewer surface noise issues than coloured pressings. That's not to say ALL black vinyl will be good, because there's so much variation in quality between pressing plants. My advice is keep reading these comments, and check out the feedback on the Steve Hoffman forum, where these things get well and truly analysed to death. Once my other copy turns up, I'll be in a position to comment whether to get a black one or not.
Adaly
I bought both. The white copy that I got was unlistenably bad. Noisy, all crackles and pops, and the sound was distorted. The black copy is mastered too loud, but otherwise mine sounds OK. It's not great, but infinitely better than the white, which I plan to bring back to my record store and see if they can do anything for me. To think, I was happy when Radiohead 's catalog was liberated from the undead clutches of EMI... I sure am glad I bought all those Capitol reissues.
Alianyau
I've had no problem at all with my copy. I'm listening to it right now... Sounds amazing. No Cleaning needed on my copy.
Levion
I just cleaned it and it gets a little better.
Olelifan
Cleaned it up, and while it has improved a little, there's still a fair bit of crackle between tracks. The start of True Love Waits is particularly bad. For reference, I'm playing this on a Rega RP6 with a DV-20X2 stylus. While I'm a little fussy about this kind of thing, I'm not exaggerating. Coloured vinyl does indeed seem to make these things worse. I have a deluxe (non-white) edition on the way in a few months, so will be interested to hear if that's any better. Aside from the noisiness of the pressing, the sound is excellent, but if Radiohead can't get these things right (when plenty of others can), people should complain.
