Sunshine Hit Me is the debut album from the British band The Bees. At the time when the album was recorded the band only comprised Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, who wrote, performed and recorded the album alone using a home studio in Butler's parent's garden. Butler had also guested on several other island albums. The Bees prance around the same psychedelic pop themes and tones of the Beta Band on Sunshine Hit Me. But somehow they take things to a whole other level, as their familiarity with vintage instruments and addictive laid-back swagger help them avoid the pretension that sometimes follows the Beta Band. Where the Isle of Wight duo's peers might name-check the Beach Boys, the Bees simply use them as a subtle starting point. Old school Bees footage from when they released their 1st album 'sunshine hit me'. filmed in the back room of the Central in their home town Ventnor on Hit Me does, however, remain an above-average production of reasonable merit, further proof that Astralwerks seems to have cornered the market on decent, but not quite excellent rockelectronic hybrid bands with potential. To wit, The Bees show signs of having creative reserves deep enough to power a long career whether that career will be in pushing boundaries of genre collision or scoring commercials for text messaging remains to be seen. Where the Beta Band are something of a law unto themselves, however, Sunshine Hit Me has some clear reference points. There are times when someone decides that an album deserves plaudits, laurel wreaths and all round backslapping because it's an auspicious debut recorded without the help of some guy with a ponytail in a big office.
